The Popularity of Marathons
  + stars: | 2024-04-16 | by ( Ashley Wu | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: 1 min
Yesterday, a century later in that same town, about 30,000 runners crossed the starting line. Distance running, once a niche sport, has exploded in popularity over the past few decades. Many of those who run marathons today are middle-aged or older, and some are less fit and less experienced. As a result, the average finish time in American marathons has slowed considerably, even as the top runners keep getting faster. It’s a sign of how popular marathons have become.

CNN —A Black-led running group is suing the organizers of the Boston Marathon as well as the city of Newton, Massachusetts, and the Newton police chief over alleged racial discrimination that took place in a cheer zone at last year’s race. TrailblazHers had organized a specific “cheer zone” in Newton at Mile 21 and had invited other running groups led by people of color to join, says the complaint. Police formed “a human barricade to physically separate the running crews of colors from the event,” the complaint alleges. Shortly after the incident last year, Newton police said in a statement: “After being notified by the B.A.A. TrailblazHers is represented by Lawyers for Civil Rights, a Boston-based legal group working to fight discrimination, according to its website.

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — Another attempt to enshrine abortion rights in the New Hampshire Constitution failed Thursday, this time in the Senate. State law prohibits abortion after 24 weeks of pregnancy except when the mother’s health or life is in danger or there is a fatal fetal anomaly. The Republican-led House earlier this month voted 193-184 in favor of a constitutional amendment to protect abortion rights up to that threshold, short of the three-fifths majority needed to advance the proposal. Changes can be made to the state constitution if three-fifths of the Legislature agrees to put the question to voters, who must then approve amendments by at least a two-thirds majority. “This Legislature has been crystal clear and consistent when it comes to abortion rights,” he said.

For the lay marathoner, qualifying for Boston is a crowning achievement. At the top of Heartbreak Hill in mile 20 of the race, the Citgo sign outside Fenway Park, roughly a mile from the finish, comes into view. The Bus RideNearly everyone who runs Boston takes the bus from Boston Common out to Hopkinton. These are your people, folks every bit as crazy as you are about splits and intervals and hill training. For once, you are not the weird running obsessive.
The Boston Marathon is arguably the most elusive finish line of all, and not just anyone can cross it. In 2013, on a cool, partly sunny day, this ebullient scene was shattered when two bombs exploded near the finish line. On Monday, nearly 30,000 runners will journey, down and up and down, toward the finish line of the 127th Boston Marathon. Volunteer, runner I used to volunteer at the finish line, reading information about runners as they finished for the announcer. It means something so different crossing that finish line compared to other marathon majors.
Minneapolis CNN —As head of PAWS Atlanta, Joe Labriola can get a good sense of the region’s economic well-being from the day-to-day activity of the city’s oldest no-kill animal shelter. And the shelves at PAWS Atlanta’s Pet Food Pantry quickly go bare. She said her pet food costs for Lola, her Australian Shepherd mix, and for Phoebe, her Golden Retriever, have doubled to $250 per month.
